1921-1931 Honus Wagner Full-Size Decal Bat

Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $3,258.75

This H&B Louisville Slugger "40 W" full-size decal bat, which dates from the 1921-1931 manufacturing period, features a colorful portrait of Hall of Fame shortstop Honus Wagner on the barrel. The decal pictures Wagner as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates and boasts that he "Uses Exclusively The Louisville Slugger Bats." Wagner's facsimile signature appears below his image. The decal on the offered bat is approximately 85% complete and intact, with no restoration whatsoever, which these days has become somewhat of a rarity for portrait decal bats. Overall, the decal grades "5/6" (on a scale of "1" to "10"). (Grading of, course, is very subjective in general, but is especially so for decals, and bidders should use their own judgment after viewing the image on line.) Decal bats dating from the 1920s are scarce, as their production seems to have ended early in the decade. The fact that the company was still issuing decal bats of Wagner after his retirement (he retired in 1917) is reflective of both his greatness on the field and his extreme popularity. The 33-inch bat displays moderate-to-heavy wear throughout, including an outline of tape residue along the handle and evidence of use. In Very Good condition overall. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $3,258.75
