1912 New York Giants Paul Thompson Photograph - PSA/DNA Type 1

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $948.00

Original photo of the New York Giants taken by renowned baseball photographer Paul Thompson in 1912. Encapsulated and certified as an "Original Type 1 Paul Thompson Photograph" by PSA/DNA. This spectacular photo captures the National League Champion New York Giants as they march onto the field, shoulder-to-shoulder, at the Polo Grounds prior to a World Series game against the Boston Red Sox. Ideally, Christy Mathewson (fourth from the right) is pictured among those players closest to the camera and is the only one not pictured in profile (it is as if he turned his head on cue from Thompson). Also easily identifiable in the line is Rube Marquard (second from the right). The notation, "1912 New York Giants World Series" is printed in white along the base of the photo. Even without the notation, this photo could be precisely dated by the uniform style, which was only worn by the club for the 1912 season. The photo (8.25 x 6 inches), which offers exceptional clarity, displays a tiny tear along the bottom border and is otherwise in Near Mint condition. It has been affixed to a heavy, white cardboard mount (9.25 x 7.5 inches) that features irregularly trimmed borders. A number of handwritten pencil notations appear on the reverse, including "Credit P. Thompson," "1912 Giants," and "Matty & Marquard." Also on the reverse is an affixed newspaper clipping that is from 1913 (it mentions the upcoming 1913/1914 World Tour) and an affixed piece of paper (or tape) with writing that appears to read "Tremont MTM." This is a particularly rare and outstanding original photograph. We have been told by PSA authenticators that one other original example is known but this is the first time we have ever seen this incredible image in any form. A frame which once housed the photo accompanies. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $948.00
