1908 Paul Thompson Original News Photo of Ty Cobb

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $829.50

Original photo of Ty Cobb taken by noted baseball photographer Paul Thompson. Cobb is pictured here warming up on the sidelines in his Detroit Tigers home uniform. A vintage pencil notation on the reverse reads “Ty Cobb – Det. Am. 1908.” The proprietary stamping “Photo by Paul Thompson. N.Y.” also appears on the reverse. 1908 was Cobb's second full season and he was well on his way to becoming the most feared hitter in the Majors. Already the League’s top hitter at the age of twenty-one, in addition to winning the batting title with a .324 batting average, Cobb also led the League in hits (188), doubles (36), triples (20), and slugging percentage (.475). Those extraordinary numbers helped lead Detroit to its second consecutive pennant. There are many photos of Cobb later in his career, but very few images of Cobb dating from so incredibly early in his career. The photo (4.5 x 6.25 inches) has been trimmed to its current dimensions and is otherwise in Excellent condition. Reserve $300. Estimate $500++. SOLD FOR $829.50
