1913-1914 Christy Mathewson/New York Giants World-Tour Pennant

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $711.00

Rare New York Giants pennant dating from the club's 1913-1914 World tour featuring an illustration of pitcher Christy Mathewson. Although Mathewson is not identified by name (as he is in another, equally rare, 1913-1914 tour pennant), both the image and pose are unmistakably that of "Matty." The pennant's 1913-1914 World-Tour Provenance is inferred from the Oriental-style lettering used in the "Giants" team name. Interestingly, Mathewson did not accompany the club overseas. His participation was limited to only the thirty games of the tour played in the United States from mid October through mid November. Still, as this pennant attests, Mathewson was one of the main attractions for those fans west of the Mississippi River, where no Major League team had yet settled. This is the first example of this pennant we have ever offered, and we cannot recall having seen more than a few others over the years. The front of the blue-felt pennant (28 inches in length) has faded to a brownish hue, but Mathewson's image and nearly all of the painted lettering remain intact. Tack holes are evident at the tip, at each corner, and on the tassels. Two additional small tack and/or insect holes are located in the main body of the pennant near the left border. Light soiling is displayed throughout, and one of the top edge tassels is missing. In Good to Very Good condition overall. Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $711.00
