Circa 1910 Ty Cobb News Photo Attributed to George Grantham Bain

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,540.50

News photo of Hall of Fame outfielder Ty Cobb, attributed to renowned baseball photographer George Grantham Bain. Cobb is pictured as a member of the Detroit Tigers as he poses in uniform on the field. As was customary for Bain, the name of the player and his respective team were etched into the negative. As a result, both are visible along the bottom border: "Ty Cobb Detroit." The photo (3.25 x 5.5 inches) is affixed to a cardboard mount (5.5 x 8) that features editorial marks and Cobb's name written in pencil. A number of Culver Pictures, Inc., stamps appear on the reverse of the mount. While no date is listed, the style road uniform worn by Cobb was only used by the Tigers between the years 1907 and 1911. Since Bain's entire photographic inventory was destroyed by fire in 1908, it seems reasonable to assume that this photo dates from sometime after that event, which more narrowly dates the photo to the three-year period 1909-1911. The photo, which displays outstanding clarity, has a number of light creases and is in Very Good to Excellent condition overall. This is probably one of the earliest Bain photos one can possibly have of Cobb, making it an especially desirable example dating from baseball's fabled dead-ball era. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,540.50
