Circa 1900 "Home Base Ball Game"

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $1,540.50

This beautiful turn-of-the-century baseball board game is distinguished by its exquisite cover design. Manufactured by McLoughlin Bros., the preeminent baseball game manufacturer of the era, the bold graphics feature a large illustration of a batter and catcher set against a pastoral background. The cover illustration seen here is one of two used by the company for the game at the time, and is generally considered the more attractive design (the other is similar but features a plain yellow background with silhouettes of ballplayers displayed around the catcher and batter). The interior game board, made to resemble a diamond, is actually the bottom of the box and is framed on all sides by sturdy wood construction. All of the original game pieces are present with the exception of one yellow "player" piece and three red "player" pieces (the game originally came with nine of each). Both the lid and interior design retain their original bold, vibrant colors. This game is spectacular for display and would be a significant addition to many different types of collections. The box cover displays light foxing and a few minor abrasions that do not distract in the least from its exceptional visual appeal. One of the side flaps on the cover has detached and is no longer present. The interior board and game pieces display little-to-no wear. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Dimensions: 14.5 x 15 inches x 1 inch. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,540.50
