1884-1941 Near-Complete Spalding Guide Collection - 56 of the 58 Editions!

Starting Bid - $2,000.00, Sold For - $10,665.00

This decades-long run of Spalding's Base Ball Guide is notable both for its near-complete nature (the collection contains fifty-six of the first sixty-four issues ever published) and its remarkable condition. Spalding's Base Ball Guide was first published on an annual basis in 1878. This collection features every edition published between the years 1884 and 1941, with the exception of 1885 and 1887. What truly sets this collection apart from all others, however, is each guide's extraordinary state of preservation. As most collectors are aware, the fragile nature of these soft-cover guides makes high-grade examples hard to find, especially those dating from the nineteenth century. This collection, as a whole, represents the finest we have ever offered with regard to condition. All of the guides are complete as issued, including both the front and back covers (the covers are often missing on nineteenth-century issues) and display only modest wear consistent with their age and former use. While the flaws are few, those that are present are mainly in the form of a few minor edge tears to both the covers and the spine. All of the pages are clean and bright, and remain firmly bound. Conditions range from Very Good to Near Mint, averaging Excellent. This was an extremely well cared for collection and probably resided within a very significant world-class baseball library decades ago. The assembly and survival of a collection of this magnitude certainly must have an explanation but its exact history has been lost to time. Nearly all of volumes in this collection were purchased together as a single lot by our consignor at auction many years ago, and we cannot recall having seen a finer or more complete offering of these scarce and desirable guides. Total: 56 guides. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $5,000++. SOLD FOR $10,665.00
