1888 Sketches of the New York and Brooklyn Base Ball Clubs

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $1,896.00

Sketches of the New York and Brooklyn Base Ball Clubs by June Rankin. First edition, published by Richard K. Fox, New York, 1888. This magnificent 64-page soft cover book (5" x 6 1/2"), which is one of the earliest baseball yearbooks ever published, is dedicated to both the New York Giants of the National League, and the Brooklyn Bridegrooms of the American Association. The cover features a finely rendered illustration of a game in progress. Inside are full-page woodcut portrait illustrations and brief biographies for each team's members, including Roger Connor, James O’Rourke, Buck Ewing, Mickey Welch, Tim Keefe, John Ward, Mike Tiernan, Danny Richardson, George Gore, David Orr, William Holbert, A. J. Bushong, Robert Caruthers, Dave Foutz, and George Pinkney. Also featured within its pages are a brief history of professional baseball, a history of both clubs, a biography of each club's manager (James Mutrie of the Giants and William McGonnigle of the Bridegrooms), the home schedules for each respective team, and various advertisements. The Giants were World Champions in 1888 and 1889, with their 1889 championship coming at the expense of their city rivals, the Bridegrooms. (The Bridegrooms were World Champions the following year, in 1890.) The book displays a number of flaws commensurate with its age and extremely fragile nature. Both the front and back covers are detached from the spine, but both are present. Each cover also displays numerous chips and/or tears, as well as a few small, light stains. A price "50.00" is lightly written in pencil on the cover. The pages remain tightly bound and are clean and bright, with a few displaying minor edge tears. Technically in Fair to Good condition overall but with the integrity of the piece fully intact. A worthy and significant addition to even the most advance world-class baseball library. This is an extremely rare volume and only the second example we have ever offered. Reserve $300. Estimate $500++.
