1875 Ward B. Snyder Sporting Goods Catalog with Color Plates

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $2,014.50

Rare early sporting-goods sales catalog published by Ward B. Snyder in 1875. This is one of the earliest and most noteworthy of all sporting-goods catalogs extant, both for its size and condition, as well as its early date and inclusion of color plates. The substantial 192-page soft-cover catalog features a fully uniformed baseball player (as well as a sailor and bodybuilder) on the cover, while the first twenty-six pages display and list the company's full line of baseball equipment. Many of the illustration plates are in color and depict baseballs, uniforms, bats, shoes, caps, belts, and socks, providing a treasure trove of information for historians regarding the evolution of baseball equipment. Also listed for sale are bases, bat bags, score books, and "base ball foul flags." A host of other sporting goods are displayed and listed in a similar manner, including guns, ammunition, exercise and gym equipment, fishing equipment, rowing and yachting products, fencing equipment, and even parlor games and novelties. Ward B. Snyder was the younger brother of Irving Snyder, who years earlier had established his own line of sporting goods with his partner, Andrew Peck. As noted on the cover, Ward Snyder's salesroom was located at 84 Fulton Street in New York City. The covers display a few moderate edge tears (small paper loss) and light stains. The interior pages are tightly bound and remain clean and bright. In Very Good condition overall. 7 x 9.5 inches. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+.
