1975 Willie McCovey San Diego Padres Contract

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $2,962.50

Six-page fold-over contract, dated February 4, 1974, between Willie McCovey and the San Diego Padres, signed in blue ink by "Willie L. McCovey" (grading "10") and "Peter Bavasi" ("10"), vice president and general manager of the Padres. Also signed by Chub Feeney in his capacity as National League president. The one-year agreement calls for McCovey to receive a salary of $125,000. This contract was renewed by the Padres for the 1976 season, as per paragraph 10 in the agreement, and was then sold to the Oakland Athletics on August 30, 1976. That transaction is duly noted on the contract and has been signed by both Chub Feeney and Lee MacPhail in confirmation of the sale. 1975 marked McCovey's second season with the Padres after having spent his first fifteen seasons in the Major Leagues with the San Francisco Giants. One of the most feared sluggers of his era, and a member of baseball's elite 500 Home Run Club, McCovey was still able to produce respectable power numbers that year despite his advancing age. "Big Mac" hit 23 home runs and drove in 68 runs in 122 games with San Diego in 1975. After playing just one month with Oakland in 1976 he returned to San Francisco for three more seasons before retiring in 1980. McCovey finished his career with 521 home runs, 1,555 RBI, and a .270 lifetime average. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1986. Baseball contracts of Hall of Fame players, especially those dating from their respective playing careers, are rare and the offered example is no exception. This is the first McCovey contract we have ever offered. The contract (8.5 x 11 inches) displays a number of staple holes in the upper left corner, as well as a few minor creases. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $2,962.50
