1963 Leo Durocher Los Angeles Dodgers Coaches Contract

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,185.00

Four-page fold-over contract, dated simply "1963," between Leo Durocher and the Los Angeles Dodgers, Inc., signed in blue ink by both "Leo Durocher" (grading "10") and "E. Bavasi" ("10"), vice president of the club. The one-year agreement calls for Durocher to receive a salary of $13,000 as a coach for the 1963 season. Although Durocher enjoyed a fine playing career, it was his achievements as manager that are primarily responsible for his election to the Hall of Fame. Durocher managed for twenty-two seasons, most of which were spent in New York with the Dodgers and Giants. The fiery and often controversial Durocher won three pennants and one World Championship during his time in New York before wearing out his welcome with both clubs after the 1955 season. He resumed his baseball career again in 1961 when the Los Angeles Dodgers hired him as a coach. Durocher remained with the Dodgers in that capacity through the 1964 season, after which he resumed his managerial career by piloting the Cubs and then the Astros before finally retiring in 1973. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1994. Baseball contracts of Hall of Fame players, especially those dating from their respective playing careers, are rare. This is only the second Durocher contract we have ever offered and we can only recall having seen one other at public auction over the years. The contract (8.5 x 11 inches) displays a few light surface wrinkles and is in Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $1,185.00
