1973 Thurman Munson Endorsed New York Yankees Check
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $1,777.50
New York Yankees "Road Account" check, dated June 29, 1973, made out to Yankees catcher Thurman Munson in the amount of $4.75. Munson has endorsed the check on the reverse in black ink. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA, with the signature graded "MINT 9." The Yankees had just returned from a short four-game road trip on June 29. While we do not know why this check was issued, given the amount it appears that Munson was simply being reimbursed for a minor expense during the trip. 1973 was a breakout season for the soon-to-be-named Yankees captain. Munson finished the year with 20 home runs, 74 RBI, and a .301 average. As most collectors are aware, Munson was not a very obliging signer during his career. That fact, coupled with his untimely death in 1979, has resulted in the rarity of his signature today. The check (8.5 x 3.5 inches) displays normal bank cancellation stamps as well as a vertical center fold and a very thin remnant of clear tape running along the front left border. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Munson checks are rare and the fact that this is New York Yankees check, issued during the course of the regular season, makes it especially desirable. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000.
