1967 Duke Snider Albuquerque Manager's Contract

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $533.25

Four-page fold-over contract, dated January 23, 1967, between Duke Snider and the Albuquerque Baseball Club, signed in blue ink by "Edwin Donald. Snider" (grading "9") and "Peter Bavasi" ("10") as general manager. The one-year contract, for the 1967 season, calls for Snider to receive a salary of $12,000 for his services as manager of the club. Following his retirement in 1964, Snider stayed on with the Dodgers organization as a manager at the minor-league level for a number of years. Albuquerque represented Snider's third managerial job and his experience paid off, as he led the club to a first-place finish in the Texas League that summer. Of course, Snider is best remembered today for his prolific power numbers rather than his managerial acumen. Although Snider was oftentimes overshadowed by Mantle and Mays, his record during the 1950s cannot be denied. Snider hit forty or more home runs for five consecutive years beginning in 1953 and his total of 326 home runs was the most by any player in the decade. He finished his career with 407 home runs, 1,333 RBI, and a .295 lifetime average. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1980. Contracts of Hall of Fame players are rare and the offered example is no exception. This is just the second Snider contract we have ever offered. The first was a 1954 player's contract, which sold at REA for $10,665 in 2012. Snider contracts are rare (we can recall having seen only one other at public auction) so this is a potentially reasonable (and far more affordable) alternative to acquiring a signed contract directly relating to Snider's baseball career. The contract (8.5 x 11 inches) displays staples holes in the upper left corner and a few small tears along the edges of the fold lines. In Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $533.25
