1962 Roger Maris Inscribed First Edition of Roger Maris At Bat

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $592.50

1962 first soft-cover edition of Roger Maris At Bat by Roger Maris and Jim Ogle, signed by Roger Maris in blue ink (grading "9") on the front flyleaf. Published by Meredith Press, Des Moines & New York. One of the most interesting aspects of this book is the blue-ink notation that appears on the title page: "Dick Young/April 16, 1962." Dick Young was the name of one of New York's most prominent, respected, and, at times, highly controversial sportswriters, whose career spanned the years 1942 through 1987 (the year of his death). Although the book comes with no provenance (aside from being purchased by our consignor for $886 at auction in 2001), and Dick Young is probably a common name, the possibility (if not probability) that this might have been Young's personal copy of the book is certainly intriguing. The 236-page soft-cover book chronicles Maris' historic 1961 season, during which he broke Babe Ruth's long-standing single-season home run record. The book (5.25 x 8 inches) displays moderate wear, including a number of light creases on both covers. A stray ink notation appears on the last page. In Very Good condition overall. This is an outstanding vintage Roger Maris signed item dating from the height of his fame and popularity. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $592.50
