1948 First Edition of The Babe Ruth Story Signed by Babe Ruth

Starting Bid - $1,500.00, Sold For - $4,740.00

Flawlessly signed copy of one of the most desirable of all baseball books: a first edition of The Babe Ruth Story by Babe Ruth as told to Bob Considine (New York: E. P. Dutton & Co., 1948). This particular copy features an absolutely perfect Babe Ruth signature (grading "10") scripted in blue fountain pen on the front flyleaf. The Babe Ruth Story was published just months prior to Ruth's death, a time when his failing health precluded him from honoring all of the many autograph requests he normally received. Thus, signed copies of this book are not only rare but also represent one of the most important and final items ever penned by the legendary "Sultan of Swat." For that reason they are highly prized by collectors today. This is a particularly strong example of this signed classic, easily ranking among the finest we have ever seen, with the Ruth signature perfectly preserved on the interior. The offered book is also complete with its original dust jacket. The book displays a pencil notation reading "1st edin, signed," at the top of the first page; otherwise in Near Mint condition. The dust jacket displays a few small edge tears and is in Excellent condition overall. Together with a first edition of The Babe and I by Mrs. Babe Ruth with Bill Slocum (Prentice Hall Inc., New Jersey, 1959). NM, with original dust jacket (Vg-Ex). Total: 2 books. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000+. SOLD FOR $4,740.00
