1978 Roger Maris Single-Signed Ball

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,304

Official National League (Feeney) ball signed in blue ink by Roger Maris on a side panel. Maris has not only personalized the ball, but dated it as well: "To Leo Best Always Roger Maris 8/22/78." Both the inscription and signature grade "9" overall. Roger Maris is one of the most desirable of all non-Hall of Fame signatures, especially alone on a baseball. Unfortunately for collectors, Maris passed just prior to the "signing-show boom," thus resulting in the rarity of Maris singles in the hobby today. With a limited supply and high demand, it’s no wonder that Maris’ signature is one of the most commonly forged of all modern-era stars. For that reason (though the marketplace has traditionally valued non-personalized examples at a higher level), it is our feeling that examples such as this, which include a personalization and date, perhaps deserve to be held in even higher esteem, for the inherent additional provenance they provide. In Near Mint condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000++. SOLD FOR $1,304
