Negro League Signed 3 x 5 Collection with Willie Wells and Hilton Smith (51)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $948

This collection is comprised of fifty-one 3 x 5-inch cards, each individually signed by a former Negro League player. The group is highlighted by eight Hall of Fame signatures, including two significant rarities: Hilton Smith and Willie Wells. Signatures of former Negro League players in general are scarce because many of the players passed away long before collectors came to appreciate both their historical significance and value. Our consignor was an avid collector during the 1970s and had the good foresight to seek out many of these forgotten stars. While biographical data on most of the players represented here is incomplete, it goes without saying that the overwhelming majority are now deceased, making this a particularly desirable assemblage. A number of the Negro League players represented here also went on to play in the Major Leagues. All of the cards are standard 3 x 5-inch index cards (both lined and unlined) and have been signed in a variety of inks (grading "9" or "10"). Eight of the cards have been personalized to our consignor ("Don"), while many others include salutations, short notes, or career information/statistics. The players represented here are Gene Baker, "Cool Papa" Bell, Gene Benson, Joe Black, Lyman Bostock Sr., Chet Brewer, John Brittin, Rich "Subby" Byas, Bill Byrd, Bill "Ready" Cash, George Crowe, Jimmie Crutchfield, Ray Dandridge, Lorenzo "Piper" Davis, Lou Dials, Larry Doby, Mahlon Duckett, Joe Fillmore, Robert Gaston, Bill Greason, Sam Hairston, Chuck Harmon, David Harper, Jehosie Heard, Monte Irvin, Sam Jethroe, Connie Johnson, Josh Johnson, Judy Johnson, Henry Kimbro, Buck Leonard, Webster McDonald, Minnie Minoso, Rafael Noble, Buck O'Neil, Jim Pendelton, Art "Superman" Pennington, Dave Pope, Othello "Chico" Renfro, Joe Reynolds, Johnny Reynolds, Ted "Double Duty" Radcliffe, Joe Scott, Al Smith, Hillton Smith, Clint Thomas, Ron Teasley, Bob Thurman, Quincy Trouppe, Andy Watts, and Willie Wells. All of the cards are in Near Mint condition overall. Total: 51 signed cards. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $948
