Enormous Signed 3 x 5 Collection - 2,709 Different Baseball Players with 22 Hall of Famers and Over 1,000 Deceased Stars

Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $5,925

This gigantic autograph collection features the signatures of 2,822 former major league baseball players, including twenty-two Hall of Famers, each of which appears individually on a 3 x 5-inch index card. Incredibly, 2,709 different players are represented here, with only 113 of the signatures duplicated. Each of the twenty-two Hall of Fame signatures has been individually matted and framed together with a Perez-Steele Hall of Fame postcard of the respective player (each frame measures 7.5 x 11.25 inches). All of the remaining postcards are housed in four-pocket plastic pages that fill up six notebook binders. Our consignor began amassing this collection in the early 1970s and continued adding signatures year by year right up until the turn of the century. Signatures were obtained by mail or in person. Because he started so long ago, it is not surprising that just over 1,000 of the signers represented here (approximately 1,023) are now deceased! This is not only one of the largest 3 x 5 signature collections we have ever offered, but one of the most organized as well. Our consignor meticulously recorded each non-Hall of Fame signature by hand in a composition notebook, with each entry numbered sequentially from 1 to 2,800. In turn, each card in the album has been numbered on the outside of its protective sleeve to correspond with its number in the inventory list. (The complete handwritten inventory list will accompany the collection.) Nearly all of the signatures, which have been penned in a variety of inks (including Sharpie), grade "9" or "10," with just a very few in slightly lesser grade. A small number of cards have been personalized to our consigner and a number feature either a salutation and/or brief biographical data listed by the respective player. Seven of the cards in the collection feature stamped facsimile signatures: Gary Ward, Mike Scioscia, Ralph Houk, Maury Willis, Johnny Bench, Fred Martin, and Davey Johnson. While it is impossible to list all of the names included here, players from every decade between the years 1910 and 2000 are represented. In addition to the many notables listed below, it seems certain that a collection of this size and scope contains at least a number of "tough" signatures as well. This is an extraordinary baseball signature collection and one that was truly a lifelong labor of love for our consignor. Hall of Fame Players (22): Alston, Coveleski, Frisch, Gehringer, Goslin, Greenberg, Grimes, Grove, Haines, Harris, Hoyt, Hubbell, Kelly, Lindstrom, Lombardi, Lyons, Marquard, McCarthy, Medwick, Rice, Ruffing, and L.
