1942 Babe Ruth Signed Caddie Card with Extraordinary Provenance!

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,370

Caddie card, from the Crestmont Golf Club in West Orange, New Jersey, signed in pencil (grading "10") by Babe Ruth. Unlike the vast majority of Ruth signed items today, the history of this piece is well documented, and has been consigned to this auction directly by the gentleman (now 84 years old) who personally obtained this signature from Babe Ruth! It is accompanied by a wonderful letter of provenance from our consignor detailing its history. In full:
It was the summer of 1942 and I was a 14 year old high school student. One Saturday morning, I rode my bike up to the Crestmont Golf Course in West Orange, New Jersey, to caddie for the players. On that particular day the Caddie Master awarded me the honor of caddying for Babe Ruth. It was an overwhelming assignment and I thoroughly enjoyed carrying the Babe's golf clubs for all 18 holes. I distinctly remember that as we walked down the fairway, we noted a man on the opposite fairway lying on the ground. The Babe said "Let's go, kid" and we ran to see what we could do to help. When we got there, we found out that the man was apparently having a severe health problem. The Babe quickly reached into his golf bag, brought out a bottle of whiskey and gave the man a drink. Fortunately, it seemed to revive the man and allow enough time for officials to come and escort him off the course. When we finished the 18 holes, I presented my caddie card to the Babe showing him that I was entitled to $1.50 for carrying his bag that day. To my surprise, he rewarded me with a $5 bill. I had never earned that much money before! Not only did I enjoy every minute of that day with the Babe, but I also got to take home my caddie card with his signature.

Not many people today can state that they met Babe Ruth, let alone personally acquired his signature, but our consignor is one of the lucky few. Obviously, as noted in the letter, the encounter was a big thrill for him, and one that he has never forgotten. The Crestmont Golf Club (its name was changed to the Crestmont Country Club in 1954) is still in operation today and is located just thirty minutes from the offices of Robert Edward Auctions. Together with our consignor's original caddie pin from the Crestmont Golf Club. The caddie card (4.75 x 2.25 inches) displays a vertical fold and a rough right border from having been torn just above the perforation. In Very Good to Excellent condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,370
