Circa 1947 Babe Ruth Signed Photo

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,851

Promotional photo, issued by the Ford Motor Company, signed by Babe Ruth. Encapsulated and graded "NM 7" (signature only) by PSA/DNA. The photo captures Ruth in mid swing as a member of the New York Yankees and has been signed in blue fountain pen along the top white border. "Consultant/Ford Motor Company/American Legion Junior Baseball" is printed along the base. That printed notation helps date the photo to either 1947 or early 1948. Ruth became quite ill in November 1946, and was hospitalized for several months after undergoing a neck operation. When he was finally discharged in February 1947, and with his own mortality now weighing more heavily on his mind, he sought to make good on his debt to "the youth of America" by becoming more involved in civic programs aimed at helping kids. In addition to starting his own "Babe Ruth Foundation," Ruth also accepted the role of spokesperson for the Ford Motor Company's sponsorship of the American Legion Junior Baseball program. Officially, Ruth was the Director of Operations for American Legion Junior Baseball, but his failing health at the time made it more of an honorary title, with his participation limited to guest appearance at league functions. This is a rare and very interesting Ruth-signed photo and one of the few Babe Ruth signed items we have seen relating to his Ford Motors/American Legion association. The photo (5 x 7 inches) displays a few minor creases throughout, as well as a few small areas of tape residue on the reverse. In Very Good condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,500+. SOLD FOR $3,851
