1931 Mordecai Brown Signed Photo in Framed Display

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,555

Vintage 8 x 10-inch black-and-white photo of Mordecai “Three Finger” Brown posing together with a young woman at a ball field, signed by the Hall of Fame pitcher on the front. Brown has scripted his name in black fountain pen (grading "8") in the lower right corner. The photo has been handsomely matted and framed together with a descriptive plaque, modern-day baseball cards of Brown, and various stat sheets relating to his pitching career. This photo, which is new to the hobby, has been in our consignor's family since the time it was taken. The woman in the photo is the grandmother of our consignor's wife and the plaque below the photo identifies both parties and the year it was taken: "Hall of Famer Mordecai 'Three Finger' Brown and Charlotte 'Nanny' Mohr/1931." Brown was fifty-five years old at the time of this photo. One of the more interesting aspects of this photo is that Brown's Chicago Cubs watch fob can be clearly seen hanging from his left pocket. That fob, which was given to members of the Cubs (we have seen other examples), is comprised of three ornate medallions commemorating the club's three consecutive National league championship seasons of 1906, 1907, and 1908. Mordecai Brown was one of the greatest pitchers of the early twentieth century and his lifetime ERA of 2.06 ranks fourth best all-time. Any and all signature examples of Brown are relatively scarce today, but a signed photograph is especially desirable and rare. Brown played between the years 1904 and 1916 and he passed away in 1948, one year prior to his election to the Hall of Fame. This is only the second Mordecai Brown signed photograph we can recall ever offering. In apparent Near Mint condition. Total dimensions: 22 x 19 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $3,555
