Two Honus Wagner Signed Checks
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,541
Two early Honus Wagner signed checks, dating, respectively, from 1920 and 1921. 1) Bank check, dated March 5, 1920, signed in black fountain pen ("10") by "John H. Wagner." Drawn on the Carnegie Trust Company of Carnegie, Pennsylvania, and made out to "Charles Beckel" in the amount of $27.08. Endorsed by Beckel on the reverse. The check (8.25 x 3 inches) displays a two-inch tear in the upper left that has resulted in paper loss, a vertical fold, and light soiling. In Very Good condition. 2) Personal check, dated March 7, 1921, signed in blue fountain pen ("9") by "John H. Wagner." Drawn on the First National Bank of Carnegie, Pennsylvania, and made out to "Mary Smith" in the amount of $40.00. The name "John H. Wagner" is printed along the left border. Endorsed by Smith on the reverse. The check (8.25 x 3 inches) displays a number of moderate creases, two small tears along the top border, a few tiny edge tears, and minor discoloration. In Good to Very Good condition. Both of these checks (which are from a modest "hoard" of five purchased a decade ago by our consignor, all of which are presented in this auction) date just a few short years following Wagner's retirement as a player (1917). Wagner checks are far rarer than Cobb or even Ruth checks, with just a small number discovered and released by the family in relatively recent years. Decades ago, Cobb and Ruth checks were available in far greater quantities, literally by the hundreds, and they have been easily absorbed by the marketplace, suggesting a very bright future in the years to come for the few Wagner checks circulating. Total: 2 checks. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $1,541
