1964 Lou Brock Signed Chicago Cubs Contract

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $8,888

Four-page fold-over contract, dated January 8, 1964, between Lou Brock and the Chicago National League Ball Club, Inc., signed in blue ink by "Louis Clark Brock" (grading "9") and "John Holland" ("9/10") as general manager. Also signed in black ink by Warren Giles ("9") as National League President. The one-year contract, for the 1964 season, calls for Brock to receive a salary of $12,000. This agreement marks Brock's final contract with the Cubs, as he was traded in a multiplayer deal to the St. Louis Cardinals on June 15th. That transaction is duly recorded here by a typed addendum that reads "June 15, 1964. This contract assigned this 15th day of June to the St. Louis National Baseball Club, Inc. by the Chicago National League Ball Club, Inc." It has been signed again by both Holland and Giles in approval of the transaction. Brock was hitting .251 with the Cubs at the time of the trade and his two previous seasons, which produced averages of .263 and .258, respectively, probably convinced the club that he was expendable. Unfortunately, immediately upon leaving the Cubs Brock blossomed into one of the game's top outfielders. Brock batted .348 for the Cardinals down the stretch, leading them to both the pennant and a World Series victory over the Yankees. He also developed into one of the game's greatest base stealers. Brock led the National League in steals eight times, including a then-record 118 in 1974. Brock retired in 1979 with 3,023 hits, a lifetime .293 average, and a then-record 938 stolen bases (which now ranks second behind Rickey Henderson's total of 1,406). He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1985. 104 of Hall of Fame players are rare and the offered example is no exception. This is the first Brock contract we have ever offered and we can only recall having seen one other at public auction. The contract (8.5 x 11 inches) displays two horizontal folds and is in Excellent to Mint condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $8,888
