1950 Honus Wagner Signed Pittsburgh Pirates Contract

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $4,444

Four-page fold-over contract, dated January 18, 1950, between Honus Wagner and the Pittsburgh Athletic Company, Inc., signed in black ink by "John H. Wagner" (grading "9") and by "H. Roy Haney" ("10") as general manager. The Ford Frick signature on the front of the contract is a stamped facsimile. The one-year agreement calls for Wagner to serve as a coach for the Pirates during the 1950 season at a salary of $5,000. 104 of Hall of Fame players are rare and the offered example is no exception. This is the first Wagner contract we have ever offered and we can only recall seeing three others at public auction over the years, all of which were also coaching contracts. Wagner probably spent more time in a Pirates uniform than any other player in history: eighteen years as a player (1900-1917) and another nineteen as a coach (1933-1951). Considered one of the greatest players in baseball history, Wagner was one of the first five inductees into the Baseball Hall of Fame and in 1999 was one of thirty players selected to Major League Baseball's All-Century Team. The contract (8.5 x 11 inches) displays two horizontal folds, with two staple holes located along the lines of the bottom fold. In Excellent overall condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,500+. SOLD FOR $4,444
