1953 Bowman B&W Complete Set (64)

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,067

55% of the cards range from Vg-Ex to Ex-Mt, and 45% are Vg (with a few slightly lesser). The unusual Bowman B&W set is often overlooked by collectors and is by far the scarcer of the two 1953 Bowman baseball issues. Eleven cards have been graded by PSA. Keys: #1 Bell (Vg), 10 Sisler (VG-EX 4), 14 Nicholson (EX 5), 15 Mize (EX 5), 16 Miller RC (EX-MT+ 6.5), 25 Sain (Ex), 26 Roe (Vg-Ex), 27 Lemon (Vg-Ex), 28 Wilhelm (EX-MT 6), 31 Woodling (Gd), 36 Piersall (Vg), 39 Stengel (VG-EX 4), 46 Harris (Vg-Ex), 51 Burdette (Ex), 52 Branca (Vg-Ex), 60 Cox (Vg), and 64 Hansen (Gd). Five additional PSA graded cards: #5 (EX-MT 6), 19 (EX-MT 6), 35 (EX-MT 6), 42 (EX-MT 6), and 61 (GOOD 2). In modern collecting times, the1953 Bowman B&W set gets less attention than the 1953 Bowman Color set because it is smaller and has fewer stars (and there is no Mantle); but in the "old days" of collecting, the 1953 Bowman B&W cards were far more desirable to many collectors, and were appreciated for their greater rarity. Very clean and attractive set, and looks much better than technical grades suggest. Total: 64 cards. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600+. SOLD FOR $1,067
