1936 R312 National Chicle Premiums Complete Set (50)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,896

Exceptional complete set of all fifty 1936 R312 premium baseball players issued by National Chicle. This set includes twenty-six Hall of Famers. Forty of the fifty cards have been graded and encapsulated by SGC. The set includes two NM+ 86s, one NM 84, two EX/NM 80s, two EX+ 70s, nine EX 60s, eleven VG/EX 50s, nine VG 40s, and four GOOD 30s. This full-color (4 x 5-3/8 inches) premium set is comprised of twenty-five individual player portraits, fourteen multiplayer cards, and eleven in-action photos. The beautiful, rich pastel colors of R312 premiums make them one of the most striking and distinctive of all 1930s issues. Considering how substantial they are, R312 premiums have received very little attention from collectors, in part due to the fact that they are larger than standard cards, and therefore have only recently begun to be encapsulated by grading services. In addition to being one of the most beautiful sets of the 1930s, a case could be made that they represent one of the best values among all 1930s issues. The key card from the R312 set features the great Joe DiMaggio. This is one of DiMaggio's earliest cards featuring him with the Yankees. Additional Hall of Famers featured in the set include Hank Greenberg, Rogers Hornsby, Honus Wagner, Jimmie Foxx, Lefty Grove, and Tris Speaker, among others (twenty-six HOFers total). In the following condition composite, cards are identified by the numbers provided by the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards checklist. The SGC grades are as follows: Two NM+ 86: #23 Goslin/etc. (HOF) and 46 Sullivan. One NM 84: #44 Schott. Two EX/NM 80: #19 Dickey (HOF) and 50 Winegarner. Two EX+ 70: #16 Crowder and 34 Hornsby (HOF). Nine EX 60: #13 Collins/Hack, 14 R. Collins, 17 Cuyler (HOF), 18 Cuyler/Speaker (HOF), 26 Traynor/Galan (HOF), 30 Haas/Kreevich/Walker, 33 Hartnett/Warneke (HOF), 35 Hornsby/Sothoren (HOF), and 38 Martin. Eleven VG/EX 50: #6 Bolton/Whitehill, 7 Bordagaray/Earnshaw, 9 Camilli, 11 Herman/etc. (HOF), 22 Ferrell (HOF), 24 Foxx/Sewell (HOF), 25 Frey, 31 Harder, 40 Mungo, 41 Parmelee, and 48 Wagner/Vaughan (HOF). Nine VG 40: #4 Bell/Bonura, 12 Cochrane (HOF), 15 Cronin/Harris (HOF), 20 DiMaggio (HOF; it is interesting to note DiMaggio’s name is misspelled “DiMagio” on this card), 27 Gomez/Hoag (HOF), 36 Lombardi (HOF), 39 Mize (HOF), 43 Ruffing (HOF), and 45 Stengel (HOF). Four GOOD 30: #5 Blanton, 10 Hartnett/Herman/Klein/etc. (HOF), 28 Greenberg (HOF), and 29 Grove/Mack (HOF). Ten Ungraded: #1 Allen (Ex), 2 Altrock/Schact (tack hole at top, otherwise Vg), 3 Bejma/Hemsley (Vg), 8 Brown (Vg-Ex), 21 Dressen (Gd), 32 Hartnett/Cochrane (HOF, pinhole at top, otherwise Vg), 37 Lopez (HOF, Gd), 42 Rowe (Vg), 47 Swift (Vg/Vg-Ex), and 49 Waners (HOF, Pr). It is not surprising that many of the premiums in this collection have an even stronger appearance than their already impressive grades, as R312s tend to be harshly graded by SGC. This is an extremely attractive high-grade complete set of these classic 1930s premiums. Total: 50 premiums. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+. SOLD FOR $1,896
