1935 R332 Schutter-Johnson Candy Collection (27) Including Ruth and Gehrig

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,185

Collection of twenty-seven different cards (of the 50 in the set) from the 1935 R332 Schutter-Johnson set, highlighted by seventeen Hall of Famers, including Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. This unusual set is entitled "Major League Secrets." The reverse of each card in the series features the player's sage advice on some aspect of the game, with the card's captioned illustration on the front relating to this advice. The design and very primitive illustrations of this rare issue give it a distinctive character and charm. The set was illustrated by former Major Leaguer Al Demaree, who also provided the artwork to R304 "Demaree Diecuts," and the cartoon bodies of players in the 1938 Goudey "Heads Up" series. The collection consists of the following: #1 Simmons (Pr), 3 Cuyler (Vg), 4 Frisch (Fr), 7 Hornsby (Pr), 9 (Gd), 11 Dickey (Gd), 12 (Vg), 13 (Vg), 14 Wilson (Gd), 16 Waner Bros. (Gd), 18 (Vg), 19 Alexander (Fr), 20 Gehrig (extremely Poor), 22 Hubbell (Vg), 25 (Gd), 29 Cuyler (Gd-Vg), 32 Cochrane (Gd), 33 Lyons (Pr-Fr), 34 (Fr), 40 (Pr), 42 Ruth (Pr-Fr), 43 (Vg), 44 (Vg), 45 Vance (Fr-Gd), 47 (Gd), 48 Alexander (Gd), and 49 Grove (Gd-Vg). These cards are technically modest in grade but overall have a strong visual appeal, with most cards appearing far better than suggested by their assigned technical grades. This is a fun set that gets little attention (in large part due to rarity) but really stands out as different among sets from the era. This lot represents a running start toward the assembly of one of the most unusual, scarce, and challenging-to-complete of all 1930s card issues. Total: 27 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500++. SOLD FOR $1,185
