1935 R321 Goudey "4 in 1" Complete Set (36)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,666

Very attractive mid- to high-grade complete set of 1935 Goudey. Twenty-seven cards range from Vg-Ex to Ex-Mt (averaging Ex), and nine cards are in slightly lesser grade (but still very attractive and grading Vg). This is a relatively strong set for this very overlooked and extremely condition-sensitive gum-card issue. The 1935 Goudey series is one of the company’s most interesting efforts. Each card features four players and the set is highlighted by the legendary Babe Ruth. This was Ruth’s last card as a player. The portrait image of Ruth is a close-up detail from his 1933 Goudey card #181 dugout pose, and because the set was issued in 1935, he is identified on this card as a member of the Boston Braves. Ruth appeared in just twenty-eight games with the Braves in 1935 before retiring as a player. The reverse of these cards feature puzzle pieces, which can be collected and assembled to form a large baseball picture. Keys: Adams/Bottomley (Ex), Appling (Gd), Averill (Ex-Mt), Ott (Vg), Vance (Ex), Cronin (Vg), Herman (Vg-Ex/Ex), Lyons (Vg-Ex), Bottomley/Comorsky (Gd), Ruth/Maranville (Vg-Ex), Cochrane/Gehringer (Ex), Waners/Hoyt (Ex-Mt), Dean/Frisch (Ex-Mt), Cochrane/Simmons (Vg-Ex/Ex), Goslin (Vg-Ex), Cuyler/Grimes/Klein (Ex), Dickey/Lazzeri/Ruffing (Vg/Vg-Ex), Greenberg (Vg-Ex), Foxx (Vg-Ex), Manush (Ex), Jackson/Terry (Ex/Ex-Mt), R. Ferrell (Vg), and Traynor (Nr/Mt). This is a very attractive mid- to high-grade complete set of this classic Goudey issue, which is highlighted by twenty-three Hall of Famers including Babe Ruth’s last card as a player. Total: 36 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+. SOLD FOR $2,666
