1924 V122 Willard’s Chocolates Baseball Complete Set Including Cobb SGC NM 84! (3)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,259

Outstanding complete set of all three different baseball players from the unusual and scarce 1924 V122 Willard’s Chocolates set, each graded and encapsulated by SGC, including the second highest-graded example of Ty Cobb. This 56-card multisport Canadian issue features only three baseball players (Ruth, Cobb, and Collins). These black-and-white cards (1-3/8 x 3-3/8 inches) are printed on thin cardboard stock with blank backs, and feature images that are unique to this set. SGC Condition Report: #2 Eddie Collins (GOOD 30. Bright and clean image, with a few insignificant tiny creases mostly at the top, and centered slightly towards the bottom left); #5 Babe Ruth (VG/EX 50. Perfectly centered with light wear on the corners, no creases, and a flawless image. This is an unusual and exciting card, with an image unique to the V122 set, and which identifies Ruth under his name as the "Home Run Champion"); and #39 Ty Cobb (NM 84 - second-highest graded! This is a stunning card of Ty Cobb displaying a sharp, clear image, with four sharp corners). These cards were issued one-per-pack with Williard's Chocolates candy bars. In our opinion, V122s are one the most classic card sets of the 1920s. In addition to being rare, they are very unique in design. No one will ever confuse V122 Willard's with any other card issue, and the fact that they date from the mid-1920s, an era with very few baseball-card issues, is another important distinction of the set. The fact that all three baseball stars are major Hall of Famers is another plus. A very good case could be made that the market has not fully recognized the combination of rarity, players, and unique design elements of these cards. This is an exceptionally impressive complete baseball subset including three key Hall of Famers from one of the most overlooked sets from the 1920s. All three cards were submitted for grading by REA. The grade of the Cobb is of special note, both because it is very much deserving of its extremely strong NM 84 grade, and because it is the second highest SGC-graded example of this important Cobb card. Total: 3 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+.
