1916 D381 Fleischmann Bakery Honus Wagner - SGC EX 60

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,259

Graded EX 60 by SGC. Highest-graded by SGC! Exceedingly rare example of legendary Hall of Famer Honus Wagner from the 1916 D381 Fleischmann Bakery issue. One of Wagner's most unusual and impressive cards, and one of his rarest as well. The D381 Wagner, of course, is far rarer than the famous T206 Wagner. In fact, this is the first example we have ever offered. It is also a fascinating card in that the extremely striking image of Wagner is unique to this set. D381s are rarely found in such high grade. Because these large cards (2-3/8 x 4-7/8 inches) are printed on thin stock, they are very susceptible to minor faults, especially creases. This is a rare high-grade D381 example that happens to be one of the key Hall of Famers in the set. Bright and clean, both front and back, with no major creases (tiny corner crease in the upper right), flawless picture quality, and just a hint of light wear to the corners. The card is centered slightly towards the top left. As is usually the case with D381s, the coupon at the bottom of this card has been neatly clipped away, as intended, to be redeemed for a prize (an album to store the cards). This is a magnificent high-grade example of Honus Wagner from one of the rarest and most condition-sensitive prewar bakery-card issues. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+.
