1912 E270 Colgan's Chips "Red Borders" SGC-Graded Collection (5)

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,067

Collection of five different 1912 E270 Colgan's Chips "Red Borders" cards, each graded and encapsulated by SGC (all submitted by REA). Two of the subjects included here (Evans and Merritt, as noted below) may be particularly rare even among E270 Colgan's; they had yet to be verified to exist on The Old Cardboard website checklist and we don't recall having seen them before. Similar in design and borrowing the same images as E254 "Stars of the Diamond" series, the E270 "Red Borders" set is far rarer than its E254 counterparts, and very distinctive, with its bright red border surrounding the image. The back of each card reads: "Send 25 Box Tops From Violet or Mint Chips and Get Free - A Handsome Photograph of the World's Pennant Winning Team." The collection consists of the following: Barry (SGC POOR 10), Bush (SGC GOOD 30), Evans (SGC EX/NM 80, not verified on the checklist provided by the Old Cardboard website), Merritt (SGC EX 60, not verified on the checklist provided by the Old Cardboard website), and Murphy (SGC VG 40). These cards are new to the modern collecting world. They were among the highlights of a recently discovered 1910 era original-owner card collection. Exceptional small find of five examples from this very scarce and distinctive prewar candy issue. Total: 5 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $1,067
