Circa 1886 M-UNC Police Gazette Cabinet Donahue - "Dotted Tie" Photo

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,148

Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. Extremely rare and possibly unique circa 1886 Police Gazette cabinet card of Jim Donahue of the New York Metropolitans featured in a portrait pose. All Police Gazette cabinet cards are extremely rare. This is a magnificent and particularly fascinating Police Gazette cabinet example in that it shares the very same image of Donahue as found on his 1886 N172 Old Judge "Dotted Tie" card. While no exact year of issue has been determined for Police Gazette cabinets, this extraordinary example may shed some light. As noted, the photograph used on this card is the very same as that which appears on Donahue's card in the 1886 "Dotted Tie" series of N172 Old Judge, giving this Police Gazette cabinet example an all-the-greater significance. The "Dotted Tie" series, featuring sixteen players from the New York Mets of the American Association, is one of the rarest and most desirable subsets of the N172 Old Judge set. Donahue (whose name is misspelled "Donohue" on this card) is pictured with the Mets and was a member of the team in 1886 and 1887. The fact that he was with Kansas City in 1888 and 1889 strongly suggests that the date of issue of this card is 1886 or 1887. This is an extremely strong and striking high-grade example from one of the nineteenth century's most elusive baseball-card issues. Tremendous eye-appeal. The photo is bright and clean, with no creases, and outstanding contrast. The green mount has only the lightest hint of corner wear and a perfectly clean reverse. This is a remarkable sample from this incredibly elusive nineteenth-century cabinet series. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+. SOLD FOR $4,148
