1910 S74 "Colored" Tobacco Silks Near-Complete Set Including Ty Cobb (104/120)

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $9,480

Rarely offered near-complete set of 104 different (out of 120) 1910 S74 "Colored" Tobacco Silks, including twenty Hall of Famers, highlighted by Ty Cobb, Christy Mathewson, Walter Johnson, and Cy Young. S74 silks are related to the T205 Gold Border series, and share the same basic player designs. This near-set is missing just sixteen silks for completion: Carrigan, Collins, Daubert, Downey, Elberfeld, Flynn, Hummel, Merkle, Oakes, Quinn, Rucker, Scanlan, Tannehill, Turner, Wheat, and D. White. S74 "Colored" silks are very rarely seen in near-set form. In fact, this is the first near-complete set of S74 "Colored" silks that we have ever offered! All of the silks have slight fraying to the edges (which is standard for this series). The silks all (except six) have the factory number along the top and the cigarette manufacturer (Turkey Red or Old Mill) along the bottom. This is an exceptionally strong collection in terms of condition, bright and fresh across the board, which is not surprising in light of the fact that this collection has been assembled over a period of many years by an extremely advanced tobacco-premium collector who has consigned his entire comprehensive collection of baseball tobacco premiums (including other baseball silk issues such as the S74 "White" silks near-set and S81s that also appear in this auction). Grading silks is difficult simply because they are not traditional cards. For S74 "Colored" Tobacco silks, this collection is extremely strong! The images speak for themselves, but it is safe to say that the collection grades Excellent overall (with many in higher grades, Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt, as can be seen in the individually graded list of Hall of Famers) with just a few slightly lesser. This collection is loaded with highlights, and just a few silks are needed to complete this world-class set. Highlights: Baker (Ex), Bender (Ex-Mt), Bresnahan (mouth open, Nr/Mt), Bresnahan (mouth closed, Ex), Brown (Gd), Chance (Ex), Chase (Vg-Ex), Cicotte (Black Sox, Vg-Ex), Clarke (Ex-Mt), Ty Cobb (Ex-Mt), Duffy (Vg-Ex), Evers (Ex-Mt), Griffith (Gd), Huggins (Gd), Walter Johnson (Ex-Mt), Marquard (Ex), Christy Mathewson (Ex-Mt), McGraw (Nr/Mt), Speaker (writing on back, otherwise Nr/Mt), Tinker (threading holes, otherwise Ex), Wallace (Nr/Mt), and Cy Young (Ex/Ex-Mt). By any measure, S74s represent one of the very best values of all 1910-era baseball tobacco issues. This is a particularly attractive collection of these colorful tobacco premiums, with many highlights including a very sharp example of key silk Ty Cobb. Total: 104 silks. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000++. SOLD FOR $9,480
