1910 D322 Tip Top Bread Pittsburgh Pirates Complete Set (25)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $7,110

Complete set of 1910 D322 Tip Top Bread Pittsburgh Pirates, highlighted by Hall of Famers Honus Wagner and Fred Clarke. This extremely rare 25-card set was regionally issued in the Pittsburgh area by the Ward-Mackey Company, one card per loaf. Each card features a member of the Pirates, the National League champions of the previous year. The key card in the set is Honus Wagner. This is one of Wagner's rarest and most striking cards, and features the same Carl Horner image as appears on his famous T206 card. The card of Pirates owner Barney Dryfuss is also of great note. Team owners rarely appear on cards and this is the only period card of Barney Dryfuss. His election to the Hall of Fame in 2008 has understandably made this card extremely desirable to Hall of Fame collectors. The reverse of each card has advertising for Tip Top Bread, and provides a complete checklist for the set. Even sample cards from this set are rare. Nine cards have been graded by PSA. Condition composite: Two Vg-Ex: Abbaticchio (PSA VG-EX 4) and Fred Clarke (HOF, PSA VG-EX 4). Five Vg: Campbell (PSA VG 3), Hyatt (PSA VG+ 3.5), Leever, Miller, and Simon. Six Good: Adams (PSA GOOD 2), Camnitz, Dreyfuss (PSA GOOD 2), Leifield, Maddox, and O'Connor. Seven range from Pr to Fr: Gibson, Leach, Locke, Honus Wagner (HOF, PSA PR-FR 1), White, Wilson, and Forbes Field (PSA PR 1 mk). Five Authentic: Byrne, Flynn, Phillippe, Webb, and Mascot (PSA Authentic). Though the cards in this set vary in grade, several cards are particularly strong, and most of even the lowest-grade examples have tremendous eye-appeal. Total: 25 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500++. SOLD FOR $7,110
