1920-1921 W514 Complete Set (120 cards)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $8,888

Presented is an extraordinary high-grade complete set of 120 W514 strip cards. This is an incredible set! Remarkably, this is an original-owner collection of W514s personally saved by the father of our consignor! 95% range from Ex to Nr/Mt (averaging Ex-Mt), and 10% slightly lesser grades (most downgraded for irregular cuts). Missing only four known variations, #21b Maranville (Pirates), 40b Bancroft (Giants), 47b Roth (Yankees), and 106b Jennings (Giants), for a totally complete master set of 124 cards. The W514 set is the largest and most widely collected of the various "strip card" issues of the era. This complete set of 120 W514 strip cards includes an incredible twenty-seven Hall of Famers plus seven of the eight Chicago "Black Sox" who were banned from baseball for their alleged role in throwing the 1919 World Series. The set is highlighted by "Shoeless" Joe Jackson, his only strip-card appearance. Keys: #2 Babe Ruth (Ex-Mt), 3 Felsch (Ex-Mt), 15 Joe Jackson (Nr/Mt), 16 Southworth (Ex-Mt), 21a Maranville - Braves (Nr/Mt), 22 Carey (Ex-Mt), 25 Collins (Ex-Mt), 31 Gandil (Nr/Mt), 34 Huggins (Ex/Ex-Mt), 35 L. Williams (Ex-Mt), 40a Bancroft - Quakers (Ex-Mt), 41 Griffith (Ex), 43 Ty Cobb (Ex-Mt), 52 McGraw (Ex-Mt), 56 Hornsby (Vg), 60 Schalk (Ex), 62 Lajoie (Vg-Ex/Ex), 64 Hooper (Ex-Mt), 65 Alexander (Ex), 69 Faber (Ex), 72 Mathewson (Ex-Mt), 75 Baker (Ex-Mt), 79 Rice (Ex), 82 Cicotte (Ex-Mt), 85 Roush (Vg), 91 Weaver (Ex-Mt), 94 W. Johnson (irregular cut, otherwise Ex-Mt), 95 Crawford (irregular cut, otherwise Ex-Mt), 101 Sisler (Nr/Mt), 102 Speaker (Ex-Mt), 105 Risberg (Gd), 106a Jennings - Tigers (irregular cut, otherwise Ex-Mt), 110 Wheat (Ex-Mt), and 113 Stengel (irregular cut, otherwise Ex). Strip cards, of course, are by definition hand-cut, as intended, and are therefore often encapsulated by the third-party grading companies as "authentic" even if they have an Excellent or better appearance, due to the cuts affecting a small portion of the cutting guidelines. REA grades strip cards slightly differently than the grading companies. The grades we have provided above do not downgrade the cards for insignificant cutting flaws which are natural to strip cards. The cards in this set are all bright, clean, and free of creases. Considering their fragile nature, the condition of this set is remarkable. This classic 1920s issue represents one of the most outstanding values in vintage-card collecting and is one of the most important and comprehensive sets of the era. Total: 120 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+. SOLD FOR $8,888
