Gigantic 1896 Marburg Bros. "Actresses" Embossed "Bas-Relief" Tobacco Premium Collection (5)

These five circa 1896 Marburg Bros. "Actresses" embossed "bas-relief" tobacco premiums (9 x 13.25 inches) were part of an extraordinary recently discovered find of extremely rare nineteenth-century nonsport tobacco items. These five rare tobacco cabinet-card premiums are of an extraordinary production quality. Each features an embossed photograph (also known as "bas-relief" photograph) of a stage actress which is designed to appear as a framed picture. The advertisement for "Yale Mixture Tobacco" is printed along the base. The photographer's credit, "Alfred S. Campbell, Elizabeth, N.J.," appears stamped on the back. Two of the premiums have "Free! See Directions On Back Of This Picture" stamped along the top. All have text on reverse which reads: "How To Obtain One Of These Pictures. Return Ten Of The Lithographed Labels Taken From Top Of One Ounce Boxes Yale Mixture And The Picture Will Be Mailed You Free Of Charge. We Have Various Subjects. Address, The American Tobacco Co., 111 Fifth Avenue, New York." These are remarkable premiums of an incredibly high production quality. In all our years, these are the first of their kind that we have ever seen. Four of the five premiums are in overall Excellent condition, displaying only minor edge and corner wear on the front and with light dusting on the reverse. The fifth premium has chipping in the upper left corner and top edge. Total: 5 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
