Three 1930s Pugilistic Popeye Windup Toys

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,666

During the 1930s Popeye's popularity was such that more than one toy manufacturer was needed to keep up with the overwhelming demand for everything Popeye. Offered here are three of the most desirable examples, one produced by Louis Marx & Co., and two by J. Chein & Co., each highlighting Popeye's ability to throw a punch. All of the windup toys are in working order and display normal wear commensurate with their age and former use. 1) "Popeye the Champ" by Marx. A turn of the key and the sound of the bell turns Popeye and his opponent into a whirling frenzy of fisticuffs. Includes the original windup key. The number "1919" is written on the underside in black marker and there is a tiny crack on the backside of Popeye's celluloid opponent. The colorful ringside graphics, picturing all of the main characters in the Popeye comic strip, are free of any significant defects and display exceptionally well. In Excellent condition overall. Accompanied by the rare original box (7.5 x 5.5 x 8 inches). The colorful graphics feature the same illustration of Popeye knocking out his opponent on five of the six panels. The box features a modern-day reproduction lid and minor restoration to a few small areas on the side panels, including the use of thin paper overlay on one panel. The underside features a small tear and a few minor stains. Excellent in appearance and perfect for display alongside the toy. 2) "Popeye Upright Punching Bag" by Chein. When completely wound up Popeye lets loose a lightning-quick barrage of lefts and rights to the upright speed bag. Includes a windup key that is probably not original. There is a small area of oxidation on the top portion of the base, but the celluloid punching bag is free of any cracks. Includes Popeye's pipe, which most examples lack. Excellent condition overall. 3) "Popeye Overhead Punching Bag" by Chein. Nearly identical in design to Chein's other Popeye puncher, this one features an overhead bag hanging from a string. The windup key is not included (the one accompanying the upright punching bag figure is compatible). The piece displays a couple of small areas of light oxidation and a few more scratches and abrasions than the other two examples offered in this group. The celluloid punching bag is free of any cracks. Includes Popeye's pipe, which most examples lack. Very Good condition overall. Total: 3 toys (one with its original box). Reserve $500. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $2,666
