1963 James Brown Apollo Theater Concert Poster
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,541
Stunning original cardboard poster heralding a week-long engagement at New York City's legendary Apollo Theater by James Brown and his World Famous Flames beginning Friday, May 24th, 1963. The poster features a photo of Brown and also lists the additional acts appearing on the bill: Olatunju Drums of Passion Company, Tammy Montgomery, Johnny Bell, Ward Singers, and Jimmy Pelham. James Brown first appeared at the Apollo in 1959 and in 1962 he recorded a live album at the world-famous venue that catapulted him to stardom. Although no year is listed, and May 24th fell on a Friday during the 1960s in both 1963 and 1968, we can definitively date the poster to the earlier year, not just because of the youthful image of Brown featured here, but because Tammy Montgomery, who James Brown had just discovered as a 17-year-old singing phenom in 1962, had not yet changed her name to Tammi Terrell. This is an extremely early and rare James Brown concert poster. We cannot recall seeing another original example that predates it (though they no doubt must exist). The fact that it promotes one of his early appearances at the Apollo makes it all the more desirable. This is an ideal museum-quality James Brown poster with extraordinary visual appeal. The poster (21 x 27 inches) displays a few very minor surface blemishes, including a scratch that touches upon Brown's image and a few staple holes. Tremendous display impact. In Excellent condition. Beautifully matted and framed to total dimensions of 31 x 37 inches. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,541
