1940 Bela Lugosi Signed Letter to Hedda Hopper

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,422

One-page typed letter, dated November 13, 1940, signed by legendary horror actor Bela Lugosi (1882-1956), best known for his role as Dracula. In this fascinating letter, written on Lugosi's personal stationery, he compliments famed Hollywood gossip columnist Hedda Hopper on one of her recent columns in which she analyzed the appeal of horror movies. In full: My dear Miss Hopper: I am writing to express my appreciation for your article in Sunday's Times. In my decade as a bogeyman I have read a number of explanations of the popular appeal of horror pictures, but none gave such a lucid and understandable analysis as you did. You hit the nail squarely on the head. I feel that your article will help me both in the film industry and with the public in general. So, naturally, I am deeply grateful to you. Therefore, my profound thanks. Sincerely, Bela Lugosi [signed]." Lugosi's signature has been flawlessly scripted in blue fountain pen, grading "10." The letter (6.5 x 9.25 inches) displays two horizontal mailing folds and is in Excellent to Mint condition. Matted and framed together with a black-and-white photo of Lugosi as Dracula. Total Dimensions: 20 x 15 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $1,422
