Extraordinary 1918 World War I Liberty Bond Poster

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,963

Extremely rare, large, and extraordinary 1918 World War I poster urging Americans to support the war effort by buying United States Liberty Bonds. Many consider this rarity to be the ultimate World War I Liberty Bond poster commissioned by the United States Government. The colorful graphics picture two soldiers lying in the trenches, as the statue of Liberty and hundreds of American citizens, from all walks of life, stand behind them in support, each clutching a Liberty Bond in his or her hand. The image illustrates the poster's message, titled above: STAND BEHIND The Boys in the Trenches." Produced by Liggett's Sign Studio of New York, as noted in print at the base. The poster (21.5 x 44 inches) is of extraordinary quality, printed on heavy stock, with a virtually flawless appearance, with the only flaw of note being a five-inch diagonal crease extending from the lower right border, as well as a smaller vertical crease extending from the bottom border; otherwise in spectacular Excellent to Mint condition. This is a true museum-quality display. (In fact, the only other example we have seen is at Ellis Island, on display at the Statue of Liberty museum.) Framed to slightly larger dimensions of 22.25 x 44.5 inches. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000++.
