1865 Ulysses S. Grant Signed Presentation Document

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,778

Large-format presentation document signed by Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885), 18th President of the United States. The beautifully engraved document, which confers membership to the "Jo Daviess Soldier's Monument Association," has been signed along the base by "U. S. Grant" in his capacity as president of the Association, and by the Association's secretary. Grant's signature has been scripted in black ink and grades "8." The design of the document features an engraved portrait of Abraham Lincoln at the top, along with four other engraved vignettes displaying patriotic and/or allegorical themes. The place and date are printed at the base: "Galena, Ill, Aug. 28th 1865." This certificate was never formally issued, as the areas for both the insertion of a name and certificate number have been left blank. The goal of the Jo Daviess Soldier's Monument Association was to erect a monument dedicated to the soldiers from Jo Daviess County, Illinois, who lost their lives fighting for the Union in the Civil War. Galena was Grant's hometown prior to the Civil War, and, fittingly, the Jo Daviess Soldiers' monument now resides in Grant Park, located in Galena. The document (12 x 15 inches) displays a few minor creases and a small, unobtrusive tear (no paper loss) near the lower right border. While technically in Very Good to Excellent condition, the flaws are very minor in nature and do not detract from its extremely impressive Excellent overall appearance. Beautifully matted and framed together with a black-and-white photo (8 x 11 inches) of Grant to total dimensions of 29 x 22.5 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500+. SOLD FOR $1,778
