Circa 1910 S22 Murad "Athlete and College Seal" Tobacco Silks Complete Set (250)

Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $7,703

Extraordinary and very rarely seen complete set of 250 different S22 "Athlete and College Seal" silks (3.5 x 5 inches). In the early part of the century, tobacco companies issued "silks" as premiums. The S22 "Athlete and College Seal" tobacco silks is one of the premier silk sets of the era. The design of each silk features a generic college athlete representing one of ten different sports (including two baseball poses, football, golf, and hockey). The silks all have the factory number and the cigarette manufacturer (Murad) along the bottom. One of the great classics of all tobacco silk issues, this is the first complete set of S22 Murad "Athlete and College Seal" Tobacco Silks we have ever seen, let alone offered! Grading silks is difficult simply because they are not traditional cards. For S22 silks, this collection is extremely strong. Excellent overall (with many in higher grades, Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt) with just a few slightly lesser. The set consists of the following (quantities in parentheses): Annapolis (10), Brown (10), California (10), Chicago (10), Colorado (10), Columbia (10), Cornell (10), Dartmouth (10), Georgetown (10), Harvard (10), Illinois (10), Michigan (10), Minnesota (10), Missouri (10), Ohio State (10), Penn. (10), Princeton (10), Purdue (10), Stanford (10), Syracuse (10), Texas (10), Virginia (10), West Point (10), Wisconsin (10), and Yale (10). This is one of the prize complete sets of tobacco silks from the extraordinary advanced collection of tobacco silk premiums that is presented in this auction. Total: 250 silks. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000+. SOLD FOR $7,703
