1908 T226 Red Sun Boxers Near-Complete Set (46 of 50)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $7,703

Complete set (minus 4) of extremely rare 1908 T226 Red Sun Pugilistic Subjects cards. Missing only Gans, Jeannette, Johnson, and Langford for completion. 70% range from Vg-Ex to Ex-Mt (averaging Ex), and 30% Vg (with one lesser). This is an outstanding and very sharp-looking group, with even the lesser-graded cards having an Ex or better appearance, but having been downgraded for a tiny surface wrinkle. To the best of our knowledge, this is an unprecedented offering, at least in modern times! We have never even seen a set or near-set of T226 presented for sale or auction, and large collections or near-sets of this rare issue are virtually unheard of. (In fact, to the best of our knowledge, no one has ever completed the T226 Red Sun Boxers Tobacco set. With forty-six of the fifty cards, of course, this collection is very close.) The forty-six cards presented here represent more T226 Red Sun tobacco cards in total than we have handled in the past forty years, our entire history in the hobby. This is an incredible offering! This near set has been consigned by the family of one of the hobby's great pioneer collectors who assembled the set decades ago in the early days of organized collecting. Interesting note: this same collection was also the source of the T211 Red Sun Baseball set minus one card that appeared in the May 2010 REA auction, which was by far the most complete collection of T211 Red Sun to ever be assembled or offered. The forty-six cards in the collection are as follows: Attell, Baldwin, Brannigan, Brown, Burke, Corbett, Coulon, Cross, Donahoe, Driscoll, Gannon, Gardner, Goodman, Griffing, Hayes, Hyland, Jeffries, Kaufman, Ketchel, Keyes, H. Lewis, W. Lewis, Loughrey, Marto, McGovern, Mellody, Moran, Murphy, B. Nelson, D. Nelson, Nitchie, O'Brien, O'Keefe, Papke, Russell, Stewart, Stone, J. Sullivan, M. Sullivan, T. Sullivan, E. Walsh, J. Walsh, West, Willetts, Willette, and Wolgast. The outstanding condition of these cards is as remarkable as actually having assembled forty-six of the fifty cards in the T226 set. The green borders of T226 Red Sun Boxers naturally make them very susceptible to wear, and (like T211 Red Sun ballplayers) they are rarely found in high grade. This is an extraordinary near set of one of the rarest and most highly prized of all early boxing-card issues. Total: 46 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+.
