Circa 1973-1974 Jerry West Los Angeles Lakers Signed Game-Used Road Jersey

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $15,405

Exceptional and rare Los Angeles Lakers road jersey, circa 1973-1974, worn by Hall of Fame guard Jerry West. Graded a perfect A10 by MEARS. The purple mesh jersey is lettered "Lakers" across the front and features the number "44" on the front and reverse. The name "West" is lettered on the reverse directly above the number. All letters are appliquéd in gold on white tackle twill. All numerals are appliquéd in white on gold tackle twill, with the material offset to create a "3-D" appearance. A "Tiernan" label is located on the front tail. West has signed the jersey in black marker (grading "8") on the reverse, with his signature appearing on the second numeral "4." Although no year tag is present, based upon style matches, MEARS has dated the jersey circa 1973-1974, which corresponds to West's final NBA season. Original and unaltered, the garment displays moderate wear throughout. If anyone were to compile a list of legendary NBA players, Jerry West's name would probably not be far from the top. One of the most prolific scorers in NBA history, West averaged 27 points per game over the course of his fourteen-year career, a figure that ranks fifth-best all time. He was also an outstanding defensive player, and was named to each of the first four NBA All-Defensive Teams, despite the fact that such formal recognition did not begin until 1970, when he was thirty-two years old. Nicknamed "Mr. Clutch" for his ability to rise to any occasion, West led the Lakers to nine NBA Finals and one world Championship, and was selected to the All-Star Game in every season of his career. Afterwards, West enjoyed a successful coaching career with the Lakers before assuming the position of team general manager. Under his executive guidance, the Lakers began a new dynasty, winning eight World Championships between the years 1980 and 2002. Today, West's number "44" has been retired by the Lakers and his silhouette is the one that was chosen by the NBA to use on its now famous logo. He was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1980 and in 1996 was named one of the "50 Greatest Players in NBA History." This is the first Jerry West game-used jersey we have ever offered, and we have seen few others at public auction over the last twenty years. The fact that this jersey may also date from his final NBA season makes it especially historic. LOAs from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS and James Spence/JSA. Reserve $2,500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $15,405
