1950 Bowman Football Complete Set (144)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,015

Complete mid- to high-grade set of the classic 1950 Bowman football series. Of the 144 cards in the set, sixteen (11%) have been professionally graded and encapsulated by PSA, SGC, or GAI, including many of the key cards (Graham, Tittle, and Baugh). 65% range from Vg-Ex to Ex-Mt (with a few Nr/Mt), 20% Vg (with a few slightly lesser), and 15% have a Nr/Mt or better appearance but with slightly irregular cuts suggesting the possibility of a slight trim; however, upon closer inspection, it is clear these approximately twenty cards have been long ago handcut from a sheet, a quality that we have seen many times in the past with early Bowmans. This is a very attractive, bright, clean complete set of this classic early 1950s Bowman football series. Keys: #1 Walker (Gd), 5 Tittle RC (GAI EX 5), 6 Groza RC (SGC VG/EX 50), 16 Davis RC (slight trim, otherwise Ex), 17 Waterfield (Ex), 23 Van Buren (Vg-Ex), 26 Lujack (Vg), 27 Luckman (Vg), 35 Perry RC (Vg-Ex), 37 Layne (GAI VG-EX+ 4.5), 43 Motley RC (Vg), 45 Graham RC (GAI EX-MT+ 6.5), 51 Fears RC (PSA EX 5), 52 Hirsch RC (PSA EX 5), 78 Lavelli RC (slight trim, otherwise Ex), 100 Baugh (GAI NM+ 7.5), 103 Conerly (Ex), 129 Trippi (GAI NM 7), and 132 Bednarik (GAI NM 7). Seven additional graded cards: #46 (SGC NM 84), 47 (GAI NM 7), 49 (GAI NM+ 7.5), 68 (GAI NM+ 7.5), 102 (SGC NM 84), 105 (GAI NM-MT 8), and 143 (PSA NM 7). Sharp-looking complete set from the early 1950s, loaded with all of the great stars and Hall of Famers of the era. Extremely attractive complete mid- to high-grade sets such as this one represent a particularly outstanding value. The equivalent SMR value for just the fourteen graded cards (not including the two cards graded less than EX and the 128 ungraded cards) is $1,276. Total: 144 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500+. SOLD FOR $2,015
