1912 Olympics Program (Stockholm, Sweden) with Jim Thorpe

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $948

Exceedingly rare Swedish Olympic program, covering the pentathlon, decathlon, and modern pentathlon, issued shortly after the 1912 Summer Olympics held in Stockholm Sweden. This sixteen-page publication is designed in the style of the Olympic yearbooks published today and, as noted on the back cover, is one a series of twenty-four issued programs chronicling the results of the 1912 Summer Olympic events. Loosely translated, the cover reads "Pentathlon, Decathlon, and Modern Pentahlon - the fifth Olympiad part 15 - Olympic Games Stockholm 1912 Pictures and Words." The fact that this program is number 15 in the series is evidenced by the pagination, which begins with page 226 and ends with page 240. The back cover notes that the programs were available in either local bookstores or directly through the publisher (Ahlen & Akerlunds Forlag), and were published in 1912. What makes this particular edition so significant, of course, is that it was at the 1912 Summer Olympics that Thorpe cemented his reputation as the greatest all-around athlete of his day. Thorpe won both the pentathlon and decathlon in the 1912 Summer Olympics, with both of those wins chronicled here. Thorpe is pictured twice, once on page 228, where he is recognized as the gold-medalist in the pentathlon and decathlon, and again on page 232, where he is pictured in action during the pole-jump event in the decathlon. While the main introductory text is in Swedish, the photos are all captioned in both Swedish and English. The large-format soft-cover program (12.5 x 9.75 inches) is in remarkably fine condition; it is bright and fresh, displaying just light handling wear, including a number of small edge tears on the front and back covers. There is minor oxidation to the interior staples; otherwise the pages remain clean and bright. In Excellent condition overall. This is the first example of this fascinating and substantial 1912 Olympics program featuring Jim Thorpe we have seen. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $948
