1894 N302 Mayo's Cut Plug Football Complete Set Minus One (34 of 35) Including Rare Dunlop - Anonymous

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $14,220

Addendum: It has come to our attention that ten additional cards in this set have a touch of color added to the borders (Barnett, Beale, Crowdis, Gouterman, Lea, Poe, Taylor, Thorne, Trenchard, and Waters). Please note the color touch-ups are so subtle that we missed it when we did the original catalog description.

Offered are thirty-four different of the thirty-five cards in the Mayo's Cut Plug Football set, one of rarest and most important of all football-card sets and the only nineteenth-century card issue devoted exclusively to football. The set is missing only Adee for completion. Mayo's Football sets are rarely seen offered in complete or near-complete sets. This set has been consigned by the family of one of the hobby's great pioneer collectors, who assembled the set decades ago in the early days of organized collecting. The set is highlighted by a rare example of one of the most sought after of all football-card rarities: the "Anonymous" player card. The "Anonymous" player card is one of the three key cards to the set (along with Hinkey and Poe). The player on the "Anonymous" card actually features Harvard football legend John Dunlop in a portrait pose, though neither Dunlop’s name nor a team name appears on this extremely rare card, which is the only N302 example without a player or team designation. Dunlop was a star at Harvard, winning four varsity letters, and later became an assistant coach, which adds to the mystery as to why such a well-known individual would be unnamed in the set. N302 Mayo's Cut Plugs are considered by many to be one of rarest of all nineteenth-century tobacco-card issues. The set features Ivy League college football players of the day. Mayo's Cut Plug Football cards, like their baseball counterparts that are identical in design, are very susceptible to corner and edge wear due to their easily-chipped black borders. With a few exceptions, condition ranges from Pr to Vg. Several cards have centering problems, which is not uncommon with Mayo Football. Each card is graded individually: Acton/Harvard (Fr), Armstrong/Yale (color added on borders, otherwise Vg), Barnett/Princeton (Pr-Fr), Beale/Harvard (Vg), Beard/Yale (Pr), Brewer/Harvard (Gd), Brown/Princeton (no top border, otherwise Vg/Vg-Ex), Burt/Princeton (slight trim, otherwise Vg-Ex), Butterworth/Yale (bottom clipped off, otherwise Pr), Crowdis/Princeton (Ex), Emmons/Harvard (Gd), Gouterman/Harvard (Pr), Grey/Harvard (Vg-Ex/Ex), Greenway/Yale (Fr), Hickok/Yale (bottom clipped off, otherwise Pr), Hinkey/Yale (Vg/Vg-Ex), Holly/Princeton (Gd-Vg), Lea/Princeton (Gd), Mackie/Harvard (Fr-Gd), Manahan/Harvard (Pr), McCrea/Yale (Vg), Morse/Princeton (Gd), Murphy/Yale (Pr), Poe/Princeton (Vg+), Riggs/Princeton (Vg), Stillman/Yale (Pr-Fr), Taylor/Princeton (Fr), Thorne/Yale (Pr), Trenchard/Princeton (Gd), Ward/Princeton (color added on borders, otherwise Fr), Waters/Harvard (Gd-Vg), Wheeler/Princeton (Pr-Fr), Wrightington/Harvard (Fr), and Anonymous/Dunlop (Pr). This is a rare opportunity to acquire a complete set (minus one) of this extremely desirable nineteenth-century issue. Total: 34 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+. SOLD FOR $14,220
