1901-1911 Harvard vs. Yale Football Full Proof-Ticket Collection (11)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,541

Complete run of Harvard vs. Yale football tickets for the years 1901 through 1911. Each example offered here is a full proof ticket and each shares the same remarkable provenance: All were recently discovered by our consignor in an album containing a collection of virtually perfectly preserved early sporting tickets (mostly Harvard football) from the era. The album was found in the warehouse of a printing company, and the album itself was a presentation album of samples that could be shown to prospective customers. This provenance was fascinating to us as it explained not only how these tickets happened to survive as full tickets and in a pristine state, but also explains why these are proof tickets. They were used as samples by the printer. All were lightly glued in the album and were easily removed by our consignor by soaking. (The highlight of the collection was a full ticket from the 1911 Carlisle vs. Harvard football game in which Jim Thorpe single-handedly carried Carlisle to an upset victory. That ticket is presented separately as its own lot in this auction.) The eleven tickets offered here feature six Harvard home games (1901, 1903, 1905, 1907, and 1909), with the remaining five for games at Yale Field. All of the tickets measure approximately 6.75 x 2.75 inches and are in Near Mint condition, with the exception of 1908 (large area of surface paper loss on reverse as a result of its removal from the album), 1909 (with corner and edge wear, slight tear to the perforation, and a tiny crease in the upper right) and 1911 (small area of very light surface abrasion on the front). This is a rare and early collection of Harvard vs. Yale full football tickets commemorating college football's most storied gridiron rivalry. Total: 11 full tickets. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,541
