1986 Ron Guidry New York Yankees Game-Used Road Uniform (Jersey and Pants)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,851

New York Yankees road uniform (jersey and pants) worn by Ron Guidry in 1986. Ron Guidry jerseys, let alone complete uniforms, are rare. This is the first example we have ever offered, and we can only recall having seen one other Guidry jersey at public auction in the past decade. The gray knit jersey is lettered "New York" on the front and features the number "49" on the reverse. All letters and numerals are appliquéd in navy on white tackle twill. Guidry's name, the year, and the set number ("Guidry 86 2") are chain-stitched in navy upon a gray strip tag in the collar. A "Wilson" label and adjacent "40" size tag appear on the left front tail. A black memorial armband (in remembrance of Roger Maris, who passed away that year) that once adorned the left sleeve has been removed (the stitch outline is clearly evident). The matching gray knit pants feature both a "Wilson" label and adjacent "31" size tag in the waistband. Guidry's name, the year, the set number, and the inseam measurement ("Guidry 86 2 24") are chain-stitched in navy upon a gray strip tag in the waistband, directly next to the manufacturer's label. Two stray black-marker notations (one faded, the other illegible) appear in the waistband (possibly indicating that the pants were later used in the minors). With the exception of the black armband having been removed from the jersey, both garments are all original, with no other alterations, and display moderate use. Ron Guidry was one of the top pitchers of his era and the ace of the Yankees staff during the club's consecutive World Championship seasons in 1977 and 1978. A three-time twenty-game winner, Guidry enjoyed his greatest season in 1978 when the led the league in wins (25), ERA (1.74), and shutouts (9), while striking out 248 (a single-season Yankees record). That performance led to his receiving the Cy Young Award at season's end. Overall, Guidry finished in the top ten in voting for the Cy Young Award on six different occasions and won five Gold Glove Awards over the course of his fourteen-year career. Guidry's retired after the 1988 season with a record of 170-91, and his lifetime winning percentage of .651 ranks twenty-seventh all time. Guidry finished the 1986 season with 9 wins and an ERA of 3.98. We have never seen a complete Guidry uniform before, making this both an exceptional and rare New York Yankees game-used garment worn by one of the club's all-time greatest pitchers. Ideally, this uniform ensemble has been consigned directly from the personal collection of extremely respected Yankees jersey expert and collector Jim Caravello (who has specialized in collecting Yankees jerseys and bats for the past twenty-five years, and is also one of the highly respected resident experts of, and is accompanied by a detailed one-page letter from him attesting to its authenticity. LOA from Jim Caravello. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $3,851
