Honus Wagner and Ty Cobb Children's Book Illustration - Original Painting by Jim Burke

Original oil-on-board painting of Honus Wagner and Ty Cobb by Jim Burke used as an interior illustration for the children's book All Star! - Honus Wagner and the Most Famous Baseball Card Ever (Philomel Books, New York, 2010). Unsigned. The painting features Wagner and Cobb in uniform during the 1909 World Series as they converse on the field.

All Star! - Honus Wagner and the Most Famous Baseball Card Ever, written by Jane Yolen and illustrated by Jim Burke, is a lavishly illustrated book intended for young readers that chronicles the life of Honus Wagner. As a point of reference, Robert Edward Auctions featured the painting used for the central interior illustration from All Star! in our May 2011 auction. The painting, which pictured Honus Wagner posing for the photo used on his T206 tobacco card, appeared as Lot 1316 and realized a final sales price of $11,750.

All Star! is one of Burke's most celebrated bodies of work and has received numerous critical accolades. In addition to its being an Oppenheim Gold Award winner, the book's artwork was exhibited in the "Original Art" Juried Exhibition at the Society of Illustrators Museum of American Illustration, which showcases the best picture books of the year. Jim Burke, whose work is instantly recognizable, is one of America's most celebrated children's book illustrators. His artwork is known for its unique style, historical accuracy, and for bringing to life for children many 103 stories, events, and characters. Jim Burke's original paintings are normally sold only in galleries. This interior illustration from All Star!, as well as five additional baseball artworks in this auction, have once again been consigned directly by the artist at the special request of Robert Edward Auctions.

Jim Burke's artwork was shown in The Royal Academy of Art's Summer Exhibition 2008 in London, and in the Society of Illustrators' Icons & Images: 50 Years of Illustration. He is a Gold Medal recipient from the Society of Illustrators, has had five of his books honored at The Original Art Show (NYC) and is included in its Museum of American Illustration Permanent Collection. Burke taught at Pratt Institute and Syracuse University, and has lectured at The Norman Rockwell Museum, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, and The National Baseball Hall of Fame, among others. He is currently the Illustration Chair at the New Hampshire Institute of Art. The painting (23 x 17 inches) is in Mint condition and has been framed to total dimensions of 24.25 x 18.25 inches.
